The primary purpose of internal tank storage valves is to ensure emergency shut off of storage tanks if they become damaged. SchuF was the original inventor of shut off valves for tank storage.

The primary application of emergency shut off valves is to ensure the safety of storage tanks containing dangerous fluids such as LNG, Chlorine, VCM, VC, Propane, Propylene, or Ammonia. Safety conscious companies specify shut-off valves with an in-lying seal.

The valves are held open by an air actuator placed on the tank. In case of an emergency, the air supply is interupted. A weight or a spring slams the inlying valve shut, securing the tank and it's contents.
